Sikandar Shah

Sikandar Shah
(?-1413)
The son of Sultan Qutb al-Din who came to the throne of Kashmir in 1393 with the title Sultan Sikandar Shah. One of his senior nobles, Rai Maduri, who contributed to sta-bilizing his position on the throne, was dismissed and imprisoned by Sikandar soon after his accession. Subsequently, Siya Butt, a Brah-man converted to Islam who was Sikandar's new wazir, urged him to embark on a policy of forced conversions and wholesale destruction of temples. Sikandar Shah is also reported to have offered his ser-vices to Timur when the latter invaded the Delhi sultanate in 1398. He is remembered in history as an intolerant breaker of idols and also as a ruler who exempted his subjects, Hindus as well as Muslims, from the tax on import (tamgha). His patronage of Islamic learning attracted to his court many dignitaries from Iran and Central Asia.
